Why the Glass Dog?
Share
I've decided to concentrate on "The Glass Dog" as a first entry in Baum's "American Fairy Tales." It's a lot of fun, and kinda snarky even. It has a little bit of magic, and some social commentary.
I was tempted to start with one or two of the other stories in the collection. I think my favorite is "The Wonderful Pump", which is about a young couple that gets their wish of more money than they know what to do with...but then ‑‑ spoiler alert ‑‑ they get greedy, and head for a moral takedown. I also like some of the imagery conjured up by the story of a boy who lassoes Father Time and keeps him as his prisoner: and there are some wild things which happen in a nursery with an elephant, monkey, donkey, and a bunch of other out-of-control animals in "The Girl Who Owned a Bear"...but I chose "The Glass Dog" as possibly the most representative of the stories in the collection.
A sneak at some of the artwork. Maybe you've already seen this some of this artwork -- our blog is beginning to leak into the real world.
Cliffhanger. WILL she marry an old thing...or will she die? (Dun-dun-dunnnn....)
